Ba'quba
Arabic: ba¢qūba
City in central Iraq with 240,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), on the Diyala River, a northeastern tributary of the Tigris river.
Ba'quba is a regional centre for agricultural produce and livestock. Ba'quba has for centuries been famous for its dates and fruit orchards.
History
Ba'quba's history show at least 2,000 years of continuous inhabitation. In ancient times, it was an important stop on the trading route between Baghdad and Khorasan, carrying silk and spices.
1999 July: Clashes, with many killed, between the Special Republican Guard (see Iraq / Defense) under the leadership of Qusay, son of Saddam Hussein, and officers who were accused of cooperating with Iran or Iranian-backed groups.
