Roman ruins in northern Tunisia. There had been settlements here earlier as well, and Dougga served as the seat of the Numidian king Masinissa in the 2nd century BCE.
The Romans made the city theirs later that same century and it enjoyed great prosperity. It is believed that around 10,000 people lived here. Dougga declined under Byzantine, then Vandal occupation.
The economic base of Dougga had been large and steady supplies of water, rich agriculture surrounding areas, and the marble quarries.
