Giza

City in Egypt with 2.7 million inhabitants (2005 estimate), but Giza is often referred to as part of the urban area of Cairo. Giza is often simply used for the pyramids of Giza.
Giza is functionally the suburb of Cairo, but at the same time the capital of Giza governorate. Giza is a vibrant city and an administrative, cultural, and commercial centre. Industries here include movies, chemicals, machinery and cigarettes.
While not being the capital, but only across the Nile from it, many countries have established their foreign embassies here. Also, the government has put many of its offices in Giza.
Giza has many luxury apartment buildings along the Nile, making it a popular place to live.
Among learning institutions, the University of Cairo (moved here in 1924) and the Academy of the Arabic Language (established 1932) are the foremost.
