Hakkari



Hakkari, Turkey

Town in the southeastern corner of Turkey with 30,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate), situated at an altitude of 1,700 metres above sea level, surrounded by mountains reaching altitudes of 4,186 metres (Cilo Mountain), on the Great Zap river. It is the capital of Hakkari province with 240,000 inhabitants (2004 estimate).
The basis for Hakkari's economy is negligible, due to the extreme geographic conditions of its region. Agriculture is limited, and livestock provides the main activity.
Hakkari lies 70 km from the border to Iraq and 150 km from Iran. It is connected by road to Van 250 km north and Siirt 200 km west.
The population of Hakkari is mainly Kurdish.

HISTORY

1516: The region surrounding Hakkari comes under Ottoman control, but local rule remains in the hands of local Kurdish emirs.
Middle 19th century: The local rulers are stripped of their power, and direct control from Istanbul is introduced.
