Israel / Cities and Towns
City of Israel with about 80,000 inhabitants (2002 estimate), situated on the Mediterranean Sea.
In Israel, Jaffa is counted as part of the concept Tel Aviv-Jaffa, or Tel Aviv-Yafo, made up by Tel Aviv and Jaffa. Jaffa is by far the older of the two, and has outstanding examples of Palestinian urban architecture.
Jaffa has been populated for about 4,000 years.
68 CE: Destroyed by the Romans.
1126: Captured by Crusaders, but comes soon after back under Muslim control.
1191: New, short-lived, conquest by the crusaders.
1948 April: Jaffa is occupied by Jewish troops, and virtually all Arabs flee the city.
1950: Tel Aviv and Jaffa becomes one municipality, named Tel Aviv-Jaffa. But Jaffa remains its identity as an Arab city until present times.
