Jubail
Arabic: 'al-jubayl
City and port in northwestern Saudi Arabia with 200,000 inhabitants (2003 estimate), on the Persian Gulf.
Jubail serves as a northern extension of the richest oil administration areas of Saudi Arabia, where Dammam dominates a cluster of cities. Jubail has a number of industrial plants, producing steel, gasoline, diesel fuel, petrochemicals, lubricating oil and chemical fertilizers. Jubail ports serves a wide selection of products for export and imports.
Jubail is among the best planned and most attractive cities in Saudi Arabia, housing even a number of aritificial beach lagoons, and highways connecting all city quarters. Several gardens, irrigated with desalinated water, and cooling-water canals help make the cilmate more tolerable.
Near Jubail, a 4th century CE Nestorian church has been found.
History
1975: Jubail, a small fishing and pearling village, is designated one of two new industrial centres of the country. This results in strong growth.
