Kaedi
Arabic: kīhīdiyy

Town in south-central Mauritania with 40,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), the administrative centre of the Gorgol region.

Kaedi is in the Chemama riverine zone, right off Senegal River where it is joined by Gorgol River.

Kaedi's economy is based on agriculture, being one of few zones in the country with large arable areas. It is also a regional market centre.

Kaedi has fair connections with other urban centres in Mauritania by road. Nouakchott is 435 km west.

Kaedi's architecture is poor and not distinguishable from other parts of the country. One exception is the Kaedi Regional Hospital, which is developed upon local traditions, materials and technologies.

The population of Kaedi is ethnically diverse, with both dark-skinned and light-skinned Moors (Berbers, but often taken for Arabs), Pulaar and Soninke.
