Psametik 1
Other spellings: Psamtik, Psammetichus, Psammetich

King Psametik 1 of Ancient Egypt

King of Ancient Egypt 664- 610 BCE, 54 years, founder of the 26th Dynasty.
With Psametik 1 Egypt returns to power after 400 years of weakness. During these 400 years Egypt became divided into 11 kingdoms, and the country was an easy prey to conquering peoples, like the Cushites around 730, and the Assyrians in 671.
Psametik was put into the position as ruler of Sais, a kingdom in the Nile Delta, by the Assyrians, to whom he owed his allegiance. With the help of mercenaries he gained control over all of northern Egypt, and got the loyalty from rulers in the south through diplomacy. But he saw to it that the southern rulers were gradually replaced with his own men.
