Rif Mountains

Mountains in northern Morocco. The Rifs are a mountain range that is not part of the Atlas Mountains, and in geological terms they probably represent a part of Europe and the Iberian peninsula, that has been torn apart from the European mainland and squeezed into the African.
The Rifs are made up of steep cliffs, and the coastline of Mediterranean Morocco is thus very rugged with few harbours.
The highest peaks of the Rifs reach has as high as 2,448 metres with the Jabal Tidiquin, just south of Ketama.
The Rifs have no settlement much larger than extended villages, which often grow for marketing purposes. The only real towns lie at the foot of the mountains, Tetouan (320,000) and Chefchaouen (40,000) to the west and Al-Hoceima (60,000) to the north, on the Mediterranean Sea (all figures 2005 estimates).
