City in Morocco with 290,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate).
It is the capital of Doukkala-Abda region with 2 million inhabitants (2005 estimate) and an area of 13,285 km²
Situated on the Atlantic Ocean, in western Morocco. The economic base of Safi is fishing — being the most important fishing port of Morocco- phosphates, and pottery.

HISTORY
Ancient times: Safi's port was used by the Phoenicians, as well as the Romans.
12th century: Religious and cultural centre founded by the Almohads.
1508: The Portuguese arrives. They build a fortress to the sea, which still stand.
1541: The Portuguese abandons Safi.
1912: Safi comes under French control, along with the rest of Morocco.
1956: The city becomes part of independent Morocco.
