Other spelling: Sety
King of Ancient Egypt (1294- 1279 BCE), the 2nd ruler of the 19th Dynasty. In many respects, Seti is the real founder of the dynasty, as his father, Ramses 1 only reigned two years.
Seti was appointed vizier and commander of Sile during the reign of his father, which secured a stable transfer of power.
During the 18th Dynasty, Egypt had lost much of its international strength. Seti set out to restore this, and increased the territory into Palestine and Syria, and protected the border against the Libyans. He also fought against the Hittite king Muwatallis further north in the Levant. It appears that he concluded a peace treaty that secured the borders at Kadesh on the Orontes River.
Seti was likewise active inside Egypt. He was active in opening mines and quarries and built wells. Temples and shrines which had been neglected for a long time were restored. He continued the construction of the Great Hypostyle Hall in the Temple of Amon at Karnak. But his main achievement was his mortuary temple at Abydos, which was mainly dedicated to Osiris. He also had built the greatest tomb in the Valley of the Kings near Thebes.
Towards the end of his reign did he appoint his son Ramses 2 coregent, even though he was just a child. By this he secured the transfer of power.
The mummy of Seti 1 was found at Dayru l-Bahri in 1881.
