Islam / Caliph / Abbasids /
al-Wathiq
Arabic: 'al-wāthiq bi-llah ibn 'al-mu¢tasim

(?-847) Caliph of Islam 842-847, belonging to the Abbasid Dynasty.
al-Wathiq appears not to have been much or a leader, involving himself in fine arts and sciences while numerous revolts broke out all over the empire. The most dramatic ones were in Syria and Palestine. The revolts would be put down, but left the empire in a fragile state.
