Contrary to Cairo, Alexandria has no historically or architecturally important mosques. The many structures around town are rather new, representing rebuilding of older, smaller mosques (which would have been important had they survived) and designs are based on other mosques. Still, there is one which is beautiful in all respects, the al-Mursi mosque (top photo) in the western part of the Eastern Harbour. Originally built in 1775, it was largely expanded in 1943 when four domes and a minaret was added.
