Hotels and alternatives
The hotel situation in Alexandria is surprisingly bad. There are no 3 star hotels, and whichever has 2 stars are about to drop to one. If you want comfort, there are only overpriced 4 star places and 5 star places with correct prices.
In November 2004 I stayed in what had once been the summer residence of the Libyan king. Although the rooms were agreeable, the bathrooms were terrible and the corridors not vacuumed in days. So if you ever wanted to run a nice little hotel in a nice city, look no further: Alexandria wants you!
If you are on a budget, there is only one place in Alexandria worth mentioning, that's Hotel Union, which is basic but very decent.
For travellers on a wider budget, there are many 4 and 5 star hotels. Reports tell that few shine more than their stars.

Fish restaurant in Alexandria, Egypt

One of Alexandria's selection of fish-by-the-weight restaurants. Most appear very modest, and streets in front tend to get muddy. Still, the fish is always fresh and good.

Restaurants and alternatives
While the hotel situation is not good, the food choices are far better. It is a reflection of the many inhabitants and the proximity to the sea. Fish is the thing here, and out in Anfushi lies a couple of fish specialists as taken out of your dream. You make a choice of fish from the counter at fair prices, and get it prepared at your choice or their recommendation.
The main speciality in Alexandria are jumbo prawns sold at prices twice those of the fish. If you ask me, it looks better than it tastes. But Alexandrians would disagree.

Transportation
Communications for Alexandria is no problem. Trains and buses offer the the least problematic means of communications. The train arriving in Alexandria passes through the long city, and has plenty of stops en route. Buses are offering a bit more problems, as there are three stations, each with exclusive destinations. There are direct buses leaving for Benghazi and Tripoli in Libya.
