The ramparts of Asilah were built by the Portuguese in the late 15th and early 16th century, designed by the military architect Botacca. The incredible level of preservation is partly the result of modern restoration.
Private houses have at many points been built right up the walls, making access difficult at points. Two prongs point out to the ocean, but only the southern one is open to the public.
