EL-JADIDA:
Portuguese cistern

Portuguese cistern in El-Jadida, Morocco

The cistern is famous especially for the thin layer of water that covers the floor, and which creates fine and exciting reflections from the little light there is and the spartan shapes of the columns and the roof. The cistern system has 25 pillars, and its visual qualities are such that it has been used as location for movies, of which Orson Welles' Othello (1954) is the best known internationally.
Admisstion is 10dh, open daily 9.00-13.00 and 15.00-18.30.
