Out here, a good hundred kilometres into the real Sahara desert, Smara is nice town. And it very much is a town, not a village.
Few seem to think similar, that it is nice, all people living in this region appear to think that only Laayoune is worth anyone's attention.
Smara is red and small-scale, but walks around the town does not get boring. And there is even a fair collection of sights here, too.
The zawiyya of the Blue Sultan is the greatest sight here. But even the mosque is a must for anyone coming to Smara, as it has a design very different from anything I have seen elsewhere in Morocco.
