UTICA:
Punic necropolis

Utica, Tunisia


Not impressive looking, still the 8th century BCE Punic necropolis is an important part of the ruins at Utica. It has survived the wealth and construction zeal of the Romans, although it had to be excavated from a depth of 6 metres below the Roman city.
There are some rather unusual sarcophagi (photo below), which are built into the ground.
