MARMARIS
A little history

Marmaris, Turkey

I don't think many come to Marmaris in search of history and culture, but the town is not without such qualities. One moment in time makes it one of the scenes of world history. Lord Nelson used Marmaris as his base for organizing his fleet before attacking the French at Abukir in 1798.
The tiny castle was built after Sultan Süleyman 1 gathered 200,000 troops here to attack Rhodes in 1522, but its walls and stones is of only limited interest. The legend tells that Süleyman disliked the castle so much that he muttered "Mimari as" ("Hang the architect"), from which the town gets its name.
The old town is more of an attraction, narrow streets and small houses circumambulate the castle.
