(1916- ) Iraqi regent (1939- 53), crown prince (1953- 58).
Abdullah was generally considered as a corrupt leader, who did little to improve the living standards of Iraq, and even less to modernize the army. The latter led to the humiliatingly poor performance of the Iraqi troops during the First Palestinian War (1948- 49). Abdullah was considered directly responsible for this.
He only managed to stay in power with the help of the British military.
